Kit Wing - Protect Olive Oil Production with High-Precision Monitoring

The olive fruit fly (Bactrocera oleae) is considered the main pest of the olive crop, causing significant losses in the quality and quantity of production. The Kit Wing was developed to ensure effective and continuous monitoring, enabling early detection and control of the pest throughout the entire olive oil campaign.

Purpose of the Kit

• Monitoring, assessment and detection of the adult population of the pest;
• Reduction of the damage caused by larvae, which directly affect the pulp of the olive and the quality of the olive oil;
• Support for decision-making on plant protection measures, based on real capture data.

Contents of the Kit

• 3 yellow chromotropic traps: Each trap is composed of 3 adhesive surfaces (22 x 24 cm) coated with glue and an upper triangular structure (with 10 cm legs) for fixing and installing the dispensers;
• 3 black plastic spines (15 x 1.2 cm) for safe handling without damaging the glue;
• 3 green plastic-coated wires (20 cm) for suspending the traps;
• 1 red stylet for counting and removing the captured insects;
• 9 sexual pheromone dispensers (0.1 to 0.25%) for attracting males;
• 9 ammoniacal attractant dispensers for attracting females;
• 1 record sheet for systematic monitoring.

Installation Recommendations

• Holdings < 1 ha: install 2 to 3 traps before the start of the flight (April to June)
• Holdings > 1 ha: install 1 additional trap for each hectare of the holding, in addition to the 2 to 3 required for 1 ha;
• High infestation: install between 15 and 20 traps per hectare;
• Ideal location: canopy area of the trees exposed to the morning sun, with good anchoring and without direct contact with the branches.

Replacement of the Dispensers

• Persistence of the dispensers: at least 4 weeks after installation;
• Recommended replacement: every 30 days to maintain the effectiveness of the captures;
• The kit allows two complete replacements during the campaign, ensuring at least 3 months of protection.

Dose: 1 to 3 traps with dispenser/plots <1ha or 2 traps + 1 trap (with dispenser) per ha of the plot/plots >1ha (depending on the objective, season and intensity of attack - consult the documentation).

Attention: Gloves must be used to handle the dispensers (pheromone and attractant) after opening the sealed package. Do not open the pheromone dispenser, its material is permeable and allows the gradual diffusion of the contents. However, you must open the ammonium dispenser and position it on the trap, properly open. Store the dispensers in a cool place (< 25 º C), at a relative ambient humidity below 55 % and protected from direct solar exposure until the date of installation. The trap must be installed suspended on robust branches, located in the part of the canopy exposed to the morning sun and in such a way that it does not stick to the branches through the action of the wind. Good anchoring of the trap to the installation site must be ensured. Frequent monitoring and elimination of the captured insects is recommended. It is recommended that periodic samplings of the damage caused by the pest on the target production be carried out, so that you are the holder of the real information regarding the EDL, and can decide on the application of measures limiting the population in accordance with what is approved for the production mode followed by the holding (complementing the information collected on the holding, with that issued by the Agricultural Warning Stations).
