Helianthus annuus

1. Identification and origin

The sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.), belonging to the Asteraceae family, is an annual species originating in North America, where it was domesticated by indigenous peoples more than 4,000 years ago. The genus Helianthus includes about 70 species, but H. annuus is the main species cultivated for oil, grain and ornamental purposes. The crop has expanded widely into Europe, Asia and South America, adapting well to temperate and subtropical climates.

2. Economic importance

It is one of the most important oilseed crops in the world, used to produce edible oil, biodiesel, protein meals and seeds for human and animal consumption. It stands out for the high quality of its oil, rich in unsaturated fatty acids. Countries such as Ukraine, Russia, Argentina, China and the European Union are major producers. It also has ornamental and landscaping value.

3. Botanical characterization

An annual, herbaceous plant, of variable size (1–3 m), with an erect and robust stem. The leaves are large, cordate and alternate. The inflorescence is a capitulum composed of central tubular flowers and peripheral ligulate flowers, forming the characteristic yellow corolla. The fruit is an achene with a rigid shell. The root system is deep and efficient in exploiting water and nutrients.

4. Soil and climate requirements

It adapts well to warm temperate climates, with high light and low relative humidity. It tolerates moderate drought thanks to its deep root system. It prefers well-drained soils, of medium texture, with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5. It is sensitive to waterlogging and benefits from temperatures between 20–25 °C during growth. The crop requires good availability of nitrogen and boron.

5. Main pests

  • Caterpillars (Noctuidae, Helicoverpa spp.): leaf damage and boring into the inflorescences.
  • Aphids (Aphis gossypii, Myzus persicae): sap sucking and virus transmission.
  • Sunflower fly (Strauzia longipennis): galleries in the stems.
  • Weevils (Smicronyx spp.): damage to flower buds and seeds.
  • True bugs (Nezara viridula, Lygus spp.): deformations and quality losses in the grain.

6. Main diseases

  • Downy mildew (Plasmopara halstedii): chlorosis, stunting and death of seedlings.
  • Alternaria blight (Alternaria helianthi): leaf spots and necrosis.
  • Sclerotinia (Sclerotinia sclerotiorum): rots of the stem and the capitulum.
  • Rust (Puccinia helianthi): brown pustules on the leaves.
  • Verticillium wilt (Verticillium dahliae): vascular wilt.

7. General crop management

This includes choosing varieties adapted to the local climate and resistant to diseases, sowing in well-drained soils, crop rotation to reduce pathogen pressure, balanced fertilization with attention to boron, monitoring of pests and diseases and supplementary irrigation at critical stages (flower bud and capitulum filling). Harvesting should take place when the achenes reach physiological maturity and the moisture is adequate for storage.
