Traditional Varieties: Guardians of Agricultural Biodiversity

At BIOSANI, we believe that agricultural biodiversity is not limited to spontaneous fauna and flora - it also includes the traditional cultivated varieties, which are the fruit of the wisdom and selection of farmers over generations.

These varieties, often restricted to specific geographic, social or economic contexts, represent a valuable genetic heritage. They are species, cultivars or lineages that have adapted to local conditions, food preferences and cultural practices of each community. And although their use is limited in scale, their impact is profound and transformative.

Why invest in traditional varieties?

  • Diversification of production systems: They allow the creation of more resilient agroecosystems, less dependent on external production factors and better adapted to climate change;
  • Sustainable plant breeding: They are sources of genetic diversity, essential for developing new varieties with greater tolerance to pests, diseases and extreme climatic events;
  • Natural defences against pests and diseases: Over time, these varieties have incorporated defence mechanisms that make them more tolerant to biotic agents such as fungi, viruses, nematodes and insects;
  • Efficiency in the use of resources: Adapted to their environment, they consume less water, energy and fertilizers, contributing to a more sustainable and regenerative agriculture;
  • Valorisation of local communities: They preserve unique traditions, knowledge and flavours, generating income and cultural identity. They are also fundamental for food and nutritional security.

A vision that moves us

At BIOSANI, this approach is not just technical - it is a deep conviction. We believe that protecting and promoting traditional varieties is investing in the future of agriculture, in the health of ecosystems and in the dignity of the communities that depend on them.

Note: This text represents the vision of BIOSANI and the rationale behind its practices and services. It does not intend to be exhaustive, but rather to reflect the truth in which we believe and which we promote among our partners and clients.
