Portuguese Pedrês Hen

The Portuguese Pedrês hen has always been associated with the use of surplus resources of the small smallholdings of Minho and Trás-os-Montes, thus contributing to bridge the meagre incomes that have always been associated with subsistence agriculture. Currently, the Portuguese Pedrês Hen is a victim of genetic absorption by countless exotic breeds of greater meat-producing yield.

Genuinely Portuguese, this breed of hens has always won the admiration of the people of the Northern region of Portugal, not only for the gracefulness of its plumage but also for its vitality, hardiness and resistance to diseases and adverse environmental factors. Proof of this are some old proverbs that the people use to extol the quality of these birds, such as “A Pedrês hen is worth three” or “A Pedrês hen, neither kill it nor give it away”.
